Fuel-saving measures
of WestJet Airlines

WestJet equips its planes with
blended winglets, which are bent-up
tips at the end of the wings to
provide more lift to the aircraft on
takeoff.
The carrier
uses an onboard GPS system to
allow planes to come in for more
direct landings via satellite,
cutting travel time and fuel
expenses.

Canada’s WestJet Airlines has been
trying to cut fuel costs by using
computer technology to calculate
optimum speeds so that slowing down
does not extend the work shift and
add to staffing costs.

Isabelle Arthur, a spokeswoman of
Air Canada, said that the
carrier had taken a series of steps
to save on fuel costs more than a
year ago which are a joint effort of
all Air Canada’s operational
branches, including input from
flight operations, in-flight
operations and the maintenance
group.

However, customers cannot expect
these savings to be passed on in the
form of lower fares, Air Canada’s
spokeswoman added.

Southwest
Airlines, USA

Southwest Airlines, the low-cost
airline based in Dallas, Texas, the
United States, started flying slower
two months ago. It expects to save
US $42 million in fuel in 2008 by
extending each flight by 1 to 3
minutes.

Northwest
Airlines, USA

The Northwest Airlines, of the
United States, saved 162 US gallons
(613 litres) of aviation fuel worth
$535 on its flight from Paris to
Minneapolis recently. By flying
slower, Northwest Airlines added 8

542 miles per hour.

WASHINGTON (AP) - US Airways Group Inc. spent $540,000 in the first half of 2007 to lobby the federal government, according to a disclosure form.

The company lobbied on legislation regarding aviation security and spending, reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration and other bills, according to the form posted online Aug. 27 by the Senate's public records office.

In addition to Congress, the Tempe, Ariz.-based company lobbied the FAA and the Homeland Security and Transportation departments.

US Airways is among several commercial airlines lobbying for proposed legislation that would shift some costs to the general aviation industry -- that is, owners and operators of corporate jets and other small planes -- to help pay for upgrades to the air traffic control system and other aviation programs. Congress has until Sept. 30 to reauthorize the FAA and a new funding structure.

Under a federal law enacted in 1995, lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches. They must register with Congress within 45 days of being hired or engaging in lobbying.

Wizz Air expands its Bucharest base

Wizz Air would expand operations from Bucharest in Romania by deploying an additional A320 aircraft delivered brand new, starting from 28 February 2008 as the carrier revealed. The airline will start new flights from Bucharest to Parma and Venice (Treviso) and will increase frequencies on most of its existing routes. The announcement comes two months after the airline established its base in Bucharest with one A320 aircraft and local crew.

China’s Hainan Airlines has applied to operate a nonstop flight between Seattle and Beijing starting next June, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

The application follows a recent agreement between the U.S. and China to double the number of passenger flights between the two countries by 2012. Transportation officials announced that agreement in Seattle on July 9, the day after celebrations for the rollout of Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner.

Hainan, China’s fourth-largest airline, has applied to operate the Beijing-Seattle route using Airbus A330 planes, according to a CAAC statement on Thursday.

The Airbus airplanes would likely be leased as an interim measure until Hainan takes delivery of new Boeing widebody jets it has on order. In 2005, Hainan ordered eight 787 Dreamliners, the first of which is scheduled to be delivered in June 2008 in time for the Beijing Olympics.

Shenzhen Airlines to open regular flights to Osaka

Shenzhen Airlines, China’s major private carrier, will launch a new service from the southeastern city of Fuzhou to Osaka in Japan from Sept. 10. The direct flight will depart Fuzhou on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:55 a.m., arriving in Osaka the same day at 2:25 p.m. local time. Return flights would operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

The new service would be the first of its kind between Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, and Japan.

More than 540 Japanese businesses have invested in Fuzhou, said Xu. Currently people in Fujian must go to Shanghai or Xiamen if they want to fly to Japan. In addition, new international air services will be launched soon between Fuzhou and Seoul, Tokyo and U.S. cities.

Globe-circling route proving flights are underway for the A380

The A380 began a series of global route proving flights today as one of the final steps for its Type Certification, which is expected in mid-December.

Departing from Airbus' Toulouse, France headquarters at 2:52 p.m., the no. 2 A380 headed for its first destination - Singapore. This will be followed by a stopover in Seoul, Korea on 15 November, with the aircraft returning to Toulouse via Singapore on 16 November.

During its 18 days of route proving missions, the A380 will visit a total of 10 different airports in four trips - demonstrating its capabilities on a continuous typical airline schedule, while performing in the aircraft?s normal operational environment.

The second route proving trip will involve a 17 November evening departure from Toulouse for a flight to Hong Kong. It will be followed by a landing in Narita, Japan on 19 November, with the A380 returning to Toulouse the next day. The third trip begins on 21 November, taking the aircraft to Guangzhou, China (22 November), and Beijing and Shanghai (23 November). Departing from Shanghai on 24 November, the A380 then returns to Toulouse on the same day, local time.

Wrapping up the route proving will be a flight around the globe via both poles, departing Toulouse on 25 November to reach Johannesburg, South Africa on 26 November. The A380 continues on 27 November over the South Pole to Sydney, Australia, where it will arrive on 28 November. Departing Sydney on 29 November, it will fly across the Pacific to Vancouver, Canada prior to returning to Toulouse via the North Pole with an arrival on 30 November.

The A380 utilised for these flights is the no. 2 production aircraft, which is equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines. It is one of five A380s involved in the certification programme, and it was used in September for the aircraft's initial long-range operations.

Kingfisher Airlines takes delivery of first Indian based A321s

India's Kingfisher Airlines, the carrier headquartered in Mumbai, has taken delivery of four A321 single aisled aircraft. Their first A321 was delivered in late October 2006, in Hamburg, Germany. The deliveries make Kingfisher Airlines the A321s launch operator for an Indian based carrier.

All the aircraft are powered by International Aero Engines.

So far Kingfisher has ordered a total of 43 A320 Family aircraft. Originally, Kingfisher had ordered four A320s in 2004, but this order was amended in 2006 to four of the larger A321 aircraft.

Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman of Kingfisher Airline's parent company UB Group, said "We are delighted to have the opportunity of expanding our relationship with Airbus who have been excellent business partners. Kingfisher will be the first airline to introduce the Airbus A321 aircraft in India. Given our growth and market share that we have achieved, I look forward to doing more business with fine partners such as Airbus."

John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers, said "Kingfisher has grown quickly and has already become one of the most dynamic airlines in the world. Airbus is delighted to be a partner in Kingfishers lofty ambitions. We are particularly delighted they have chosen the A321, thus becoming a launch customer in India."

Kingfisher is a rapidly growing force in Indian civil aviation already and has become one of the country's largest airlines. It already flies 10 Airbus A320s and three Airbus A319s on domestic routes and will receive 30 more single aisle aircraft from Airbus in the near future.

Earlier, Kingfisher placed firm orders for five Airbus A380s, five A330s and five A350s for use on long-range international and regional services. So far, Kingfisher's Airbus Family fleet will grow to more than 60 aircraft.

The A321 has a range of up to 5,600 km/3,000 nm and can seat some 185 passengers in two classes, and up to 220 in a single class. The A319, A320 and A321 are unique in their class in offering a containerised cargo loading system, which is compatible with the worldwide standard widebody system. This reduces ground equipment and handling costs.

The A320 Family has the widest single-aisle fuselage on the market and features the most modern and complete fly-by-wire technology available on any single-aisle aircraft.

Airbus A380 beats expectations during heavy crosswind tests in Iceland

The world's largest commercial airliner, the 555-seat A380, successfully completed crosswind tests in extreme wind conditions at Keflavik Airport in Iceland, on Friday 10th November. A minimum of 23 knots (42 km/h) crosswind must be demonstrated at take off and landing for its Type Certification that is expected in mid-December.

MSN004, one of the five developmental A380 aircraft, carried out a series of six landings and five take-offs with crosswinds above 40 knots (74 km/h), gusting up to 56 knots (104 km/h), which is considerably higher than the value required for Type Certification. During the tests, the A380 was put through its paces, and it showed that it will be able to operate easily with very strong crosswinds during normal operations. This is the first time an Airbus aircraft has performed tests in such crosswind conditions.

During this series of tests, three test pilots flew the A380 developmental aircraft MSN004, Claude Lelaie, Senior Vice President of Airbus' Flight Division, Jacques Rosay, Chief Test Pilot and Vice President, and a pilot from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The other members of the crew were Fernando Alonso, Vice President Flight Division, Flight Test Engineering, Pascal Verneau, Test Flight Engineer and Eric Isorce, Flight Test Engineer.

"The aircraft's behaviour and handling was very smooth and landing in particular was easy, despite the heavy cross winds," said Claude Lelaie, Senior Vice President, Flight Division. "This was the first time we have carried out tests at such high cross wind speeds and yet again, the A380 is outperforming even in these extreme conditions."

Five development A380s have now flown. Four aircraft, one of which is powered by the Engine Alliance GP7200 engine, are now actively involved in the intensive flight test programme, which has already reached over 730 flights and 2,300 flight hours. The fifth aircraft is undergoing cabin installation in Hamburg. Firm orders and commitments for the A380 currently stand at 166 aircraft for 15 customers.

AirAsia orders 40 more A320 Family aircraft

AirAsia, the region's fastest growing low cost carrier, has signed a contract for 40 more A320 Family aircraft, and taken another 30 on option. This brings their total orders for the Airbus Single Aisle Family to 100. A total of seven A320s are currently in service with AirAsia.

Over time they will completely replace the Boeing 737-300 fleet currently operated by the AirAsia Group, which comprises AirAsia in Malaysia, Thai AirAsia in Thailand and AirAsia Indonesia. All A320 aircraft will be configured with 180 seats.

"The A320 has heralded a new era for AirAsia. The sophistication of these aircraft has enhanced our image and brand and enabled us to capture a wider market segment than previously. The superiority of the A320s in terms of fuel burn, maintenance requirements, increased capacity, wider cabin and larger cargo payload, has allowed us to have greater operational efficiency, while ensuring that our cost optimization program remains as the lowest in the world," said Datuk Tony Fernandes, Group CEO, AirAsia Berhad.

AirAsia is one of many low cost carriers (LCC) from the Asia-Pacific region to introduce A320 Family aircraft, with 12 LCC from Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines and Singapore already having the aircraft in service. More than 520 Airbus A320 Family aircraft are in service with 39 airlines in Asia-Pacific, with total orders from the region now close to 1,000 aircraft. The A320 Family has a widespread reputation for high dispatch reliability on short hops, with wide aisles facilitating quick turnarounds for efficient operations.

This Family offers a range of essential benefits to low cost airlines: Wider aisles and full-scale service doors, as well as a bigger, more accessible cargo area enabling faster turnaround times. Furthermore the A320 Family aircraft are equipped with the biggest overhead storage space in their class for more convenient storage of modern roll-aboard luggage.

Garuda Jakart-Japan Passenger Traffic Increases

Garuda Indonesia's passenger traffic on the Jakarta-Japan route increased 21 percent to 357.357 passengers during the whole period of year 2005 compared to the previous year. While in the first quarter of 2006, passengers carried has accumulated to 175.169 passengers.

Arif Wibowo, general manager Garuda Indonesia for Japan, Korea and United States said that the statistic reflected the tourists recovery trust to Indonesian destinations.
"The trend is increasing," Wibowo added. To increase inbound Japanese tourists visting the country, Garuda among other appointed Fujita Sachiko, Miss Japan 2005 as Garuda's ambassador.
Her main mission, to introduce Indonesia to Japanese people, especially the younger generations. "Garuda is aiming Japan potential market, the students, young women and the newly weds," said Wibowo early September.

In a different occasion, Ari Sapari, Garuda's vice president operation said, the state-owned airline currently is evaluating 45 non-profitable domestic and international routes.The carrier flies to 65 destinations of which 20 new routes are categorized as profitable.

Among the non-profitable routes he mentioned Yogyakarta-Denpasar, the load factor only 68,4 percent, would be likely scrapped or reduced its frequencies. On the international routes, load factor on the Denpasar-Osaka sector which averagely reached only 49,7 percent, would be reevaluated.
The most profitable domestic routes he detailed were the Jakarta-Balikpapan with a 73,5 percent load factor, and the Jakarta-Jeddah route with a 85,4 load factor, for the international routes. (ds)

Government to Issue Three New Airline Permits

The Transportation Ministry plans to issue three new airline permits for schedule flights before end of the year. The three carriers to acquire the SIUP (Surat Izin usaha Penerbangan) permits namely, PT Indonesia Air Transport (IAT), Nusantara Air Charter (NAC) Avia Patra, and KalStar of Kalimantan.
Further the Director General of Air Transportation, Iksan Tatang said, the three operators has submitted proposal to the ministry for feeder routes in remote areas of the country. "Specifically to service air routes in the far eastern part of Indonesia," he said.
He reminded that IAT and NAC has already acquired license permit for charter flights and is currently planning also to fly scheduled flights. "While KalStar is presently a company in the travel agency sector," Tatang explained further after inaugurating 541 students of the Curug Flying School in Tangerang, near Jakarta.
"According to the Director General, our permit will be issued in December," said Andi Masyhur, president director of KalStar to Angkasa in mid September. Currently his company wet-lease an ATR-42 and two ATR-72 commuter planes from Trigana air charter company in servicing the whole island of Kalimantan and services connecting to Java island.
In line with submitting the airline permit, KalStar planned to strengthen the company with five new aircraft, two ATR-42s and three ATR-72s making KalStar the biggest operator of Franco-Italian ATR planes in Indonesia. At present the ATR population in the region has reached over 20 units.
"Our fleet planning is only one type, Avion de Tranport Regionale commuter plane," Masyhur said who headquartered his KalStar in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) satellite town in the west outskirt of capital Jakarta. (ds-angkasa magazine)

Russian Embassy's representative who met the crews who flew the planes from city of Khabarovask in the Russian Far East told Mikhail Tsyganov of Russian news agency Novosti Jakarta Bureau and Yuri Zaitsev in Moscow that the crews would starts working immediately starting Tuesday (31/10) onward in extinguishing the fires.
Tsyganov told Angkasa last week on Friday (27/10), Dino Patti Djalal, the Indonesian presidential's spokesman said that Indonesian government "is delighted" to have signed a contract on leasing of these two Be-200s.
"We badly need this aircraft because our air fleet is insufficient for fighting such fires as are raging in Kalimantan and Sumatra," said Djalal.
"In addition to this contract we also hope to develop constructive long-term cooperation with Russia in this area because fires happen in Sumatra and Kalimantan every year," he added.
"I hope that our cooperation will continue to develop, and I am sure this contract will not be the last one," Rachmat Witoelar, state minister for the environment said further.
Russian fire fighting planes have an extremely practical capability of scooping water up directly from a storage basin, told RIA Novosti Kusmayanto Kadiman, Indonesian State Minister for Scientific Research and Technology. The minister accentuated the fact that the Russian Be-200 was the only large plane capable of this.
Yevgeny Filatov, a spokesman of the Russian Emergencies Ministry told Novosti in Jakarta that the contract had been signed 10 days ago by his ministry and Indonesia's National Disaster Coordination Agency (BAKORNAS) with the assistance of the Irkut aerospace holding.
"The tentative duration (of the operation) is six weeks," Filatov said. "It is not the first time we help Indonesia to cope with the consequences of natural disasters," he added. He said the ministry has dispatched a mobile hospital and a search and rescue group to Nias after a destructive earthquake in March 2005. Russia also sent a fully stocked and equipped military hospital to Aceh Province after tsunami had claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in December 2004.
Angkasa's source mentioned that the government allocated a budget of Rp 5 billion (around US$500.000) for leasing the water bomber planes. He further revealed, beside fixed-wing, Russian helicopter-manufacturer, Kamov, also offered its Ka-32A firefighting helicopter to Indonesia.
The first Be-200 made its maiden flight in September 1998, featured special equipment for scooping up water at aquaplaning speeds equaling 90-95 percent of its take-off speed. This greatly reduces structural loads and fuel consumption and extends the service life of the plane and its engines.
The uniqueness of the plane, it can take off from 1,800-meter runways, lakes, rivers and inland seas. It can land in choppy seas with 1.2-meter waves and scoop up 12-13 metric ton of water in eight tank sections in just 12-14 seconds at aquaplaning speeds of 150-190 kph.

Merpati and Mandala to Open New Routes

State-owned Merpati Nusantara Airlines plans to open new route Bandung-Medan and Palembang. While private-owned Mandala Airlines has introduce recently its new route Jakarta-Malang with Boeing 737.

Merpati's Bandung District Manager, Donny Rurut further added, beside Medan, Merpati is planning to fly Bandung-Palembang and Padang Sumatran cities and Batam Island, a 30 minutes with boat to Singapore.
"The three new routes will be flown in February and April next year," he explained.
Mandala spokesman, Alexius Widjoyo said, with introducing the Malang flight, Mandala currently flies to 18 domestic cities. Prior to the new destination, Mandala flies to Padang, Medan, Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Batam, Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta dan several cities in eastern Indonesia. (ds)

Lion Air Orders More 30 Boeing 737-900ERs

Farnborough, United Kingdom, July 17, 2006 — The Boeing Company and Jakarta-based Lion Air today announced that the airline exercised its purchase rights and ordered an additional 30 737-900ERs (Extended Range). Valued at more than $2.2 billion at list prices, deliveries of these additional 737-900ERs are scheduled to begin in early 2010 and continue through 2012.

The agreement was announced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Alan Mulally and Lion Air President Director Rusdi Kirana at the Farnborough Air Show. Lion Air, the launch customer for the 737-900ER, announced its first order for 30 737-900ERs and 30 purchase rights in July 2005. These two orders combined total 60 airplanes. Deliveries of the first order are scheduled to begin in 2007.

The order was recently included on the Boeing Commercial Airplanes Orders and Deliveries Web site, attributed to an unidentified customer.

“The Next-Generation 737 is the most efficient single-aisle family today, and we are thrilled that Lion Air has selected the 737-900ER to support its expansion and fleet modernization plans,” Mulally said. “The 737-900ER increases the 737 family’s range and seat capability, and it shares the same industry-leading reliability of the world’s most successful airplane family. Lion Air has been a great launch customer, and we are looking forward to delivering the very first 737-900ER to Lion Air in 2007.”

The 737-900ER, the newest member of the Next-Generation 737 airplane family, increases the capability of the 737 by carrying more passengers and flying farther.

“Maximizing the unprecedented economic advantages of the 737-900ER is the key to our future growth as we expand our routes and add new destinations within our growing market,” said Kirana. “We look forward to introducing the 737-900ER into Lion Air’s fleet and to our growing base of customers.”

The 737-900ER is the same size as today’s 737-900, but with the addition of a pair of exit doors and a flat-rear pressure bulkhead, it can carry 26 additional passengers, raising the maximum capacity from 189 to 215 in a single-class configuration. Additionally, Blended Winglets, advanced technology wing enhancements and auxiliary fuel tanks will give the 737-900ER an increased range of 3,200 nautical miles (5,925 kilometers) — 500 nautical miles more than the 737-900.

“This fleet will help meet Lion Air’s strategic expansion goals,” said Dinesh Keskar, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Sales, South-Southeast Asia. “With more range and the lowest operating cost of any single-aisle jet in its class, the 737-900ER is an ideal fit to deliver superior economics and premier service.”

Lion Air operates an all-Boeing fleet and is the largest low-cost airline in Asia with traffic reaching one million passengers a month since the airline’s inception in June 2000.
